Pyrophilia: A relatively uncommon paraphilia in which the patient derives gratification from fire and fire-starting activity. It is distinguished from pyromania by the gratification being of a sexual nature. (Wikipedia, 2012)

Pyrophiliacs, (those who get their sexual thrills from fires), get their mojos enflamed by flickerings of flame. They climax when fires dance, deriving their boners from the ignition of, or simply watching of, a fire. Arousal can also be achieved by fantasies or talk of fire.

As with all philias, pyrophilia is considered a psychological disorder, albeit, a fairly uncommon one. The cause is unknown but the treatment can consist of hypnosis or cognitive behavioral therapy with a psychiatrist or psychologist.

I can’t say I’ve ever come across a pyrophiliac in my myriad of sexploits, but I can appreciate that fire is captivating, powerful, and primal. Think of humans in their evolutionary infancy. Fire was the center of existence. It proffered both warmth and weapons. Provided protection and a means to acquiring food. In our caveman brains, there’s still fascination for the flame, and for some, that fascination becomes fetish.

Pyrophilia isn’t the easiest of philias to navigate. It can be very dangerous to set ones lover or oneself on fire. Duh! But fire fetishists understand the risks and are willing to incur possible injuries in the name sating their passions.

In the BDSM world, fire play may become a part of the arsenal. These folk can and do use fire in a number of ways to get their kinks. Fire flogging, whipping, and cupping can all be practiced.

One woman on a chat board confides, “when I'm on fire I feel content, joyful, and free.”

Yet another pyrophiliac writes;

my biggest fantasy is to have sex with someone while both of our clothes and the bed are on fire and we are getting burned a bit but we don't care because we are having too much sex to care. That would be hot.

Hot indeed! Fire fetishists are certain to stay warm, if not cozy.
