The health benefits of sex are often touted, but despite claims to the contrary, one thing sex does not do for the average person is burn a lot of calories. A new article published in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine exposes a number of fallacies about weight loss and among them is the misconception that a roll in the hay is as good for your bod as a workout at the gym.

In truth, the only study that actually scientifically measured the energy output  during sex found that on average, sex lasted only  six minutes and burned a mere 21 calories. So, that morning fuck you had doesn’t mean you should skip your evening jog. But, you’re gym routine shouldn’t stand in for sex either. There are some real benefits to a good fucking and below you’ll find the top five. However, health shmealth! At the end of the day, who needs a reason to screw when the sheer joy of it alone is enough to keep one cumming back for more.

5. Sex Improves Heart Health

A 20-year-long British study shows that men who had sex two or more times a week were half as likely to have a fatal heart attack than men who had sex less than once a month. And FYI, there’s no evidence that boning when you’re old will lead to a heart attack. Provided they can rise to the occasion, seniors can and should fuck their brains out, just like the rest of us.

4. Sex Boosts Immunity

Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A, or IgA, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections. A Wilkes University study had 112 college students keep records of how often they had sex and also provide saliva samples for the study. Those who had sex once or twice a week had higher levels of IgA, an antibody that could help you avoid a cold or other infection, than other students.

 3. Sex As Pain Relief

Oxytocin also boosts your body's painkillers, called endorphins. Headache, arthritis pain, or PMS symptoms can and often do improve after sex. So next time your GF claims to not want it cause she has a headache, let her know a deep dicking could be just what  the doctor ordered. Just make sure she gets her cookie, as cumming is an essential ingredient in leaving her with those feel good vibes.

2. Better Sleep

The oxytocin released during orgasm also promotes sleep, research shows. Getting enough sleep has also been linked with a host of other health benefits, such as a healthy weight and better blood pressure. That's something to remind your lady of the next time she gives you a hard time for doing the old screw and snooze.

1. Less Stress, Better Blood Pressure

Having sex could lower your stress and your blood pressure. The finding comes from a Scottish study of 24 women and 22 men who kept records of their sexual activity. The researchers put them in stressful situations, such as speaking in public and doing math out loud, then checked their blood pressure. People who had penetrative sex responded better to stress than those who engaged in other kinds of sex or abstained.
