When Hollywood Goes Hardcore: 5 Mainstream Movies With Real Sex Scenes

By Randall Vicks on August 19, 2013

Hollywood is a weird place. For all its supposed liberal bias and progressive views, there still remains a pretty clear divide between mainstream cinema and the porn industry. Never mind the fact that they both sell sex, in their own ways, or the fact that porn valley and tinsel town itself are, like, right beside each other. Both industries claim to offer a more realistic view of human sex and sexuality. Porn because, well, it has actual sex in it, and film because even though their sex is fake, the plotlines are more realistic (sometimes). But what happens when a pioneering director tries to brindge the gap? Is it possible to make a film that has realistic scenarios and real sex, tittilation and art? Well, what generally happens is that the film is embraced by neither party, and makes a whole lot of nothing at the box office. Too explicit for mainstream cinema, and not explicit enough for actual porn. So I put together this little list today not just as a convinient excuse to look at some celebrities naked (though that's a fun side effect), but also to help my fellow man add to his spank bank.

5. Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. Besides having a really annoying name to write out, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song was notable for being the only Blaxploitation film ever to feature real sex acts (as far as we know). The director, Melvin Van Peebles, cast himself in all of the 'non-simulated sex,' much like the Brown Bunny dude, leading me to question why I didn't become a director. Fun fact: not only did Mr. Van Peebles pick up an STI during the filming of this movie (hey, it was the 70's), he also got workman's comp for it.

4. Brown Bunny, starring Chloe Sevigny. A classic among celebrity fetishists everywhere, Brown Bunny is, for the most part, not very interesting. The rather notable exception is a scene in the movie where Chloe Sevigny (who you might remember from American Psycho or Boys Don't Cry) blows the Star/Director, her then boyfriend Vincent Gallo, forever ruining the "it's not porn, it's art" excuse for the rest of us.

3. Antichrist, from director Lars von Trier. I could have included pretty much any of Lars von Trier's films in here (including the upcoming Nymphomaniac, starring Jamie Bell and Shia LaBoeuf, as if he wasn't insufferable enough already), but I decided to go with 2009's Antichrist because it's got Willem Dafoe in it.

Are you horny yet?

2. Shortbus, starring Canadian "celebrity" Sook-Yin Lee. Our Canadian readers might recognize the name of Sook-Yin Lee, who, among other things, was a host on CBC Radio and a VJ on Much Music. This film made a lot of headlines when it came out not just for the quantity of explicit sex scenes in it (there are a bunch), but also for the sheer variety of them. There's a little something for everyone in Shortbus.

1. 9 Songs, starring Margo Stilley. If the name "Margo Stilley" rings a few bells, it might be because she was a relatively successful model before making her acting debut (and finale, as it turns out) in 9 Songs. It makes the top of the list because sex is pretty much all there is to this film. In fact, if you were to stumble accross it on late night cable, you could be forgiven if you thought you were watching a porn. Turns out the only difference between pornography is marketing, who knew?

Honorable mention: Caligula. I know, I know, this one seems like it should be on the top of the list. But I disqualified the modern classic because the porn scenes all featured professional porn stars, and none of the main stars of the film. Sorry, Bob Guccione.

If you've had enough of Hollywood's fakery, why not head over to Brazzers, where all the sex is real?
